Justice Altaf Ibrahim Qureshi as Acting Chief Election Commissioner


He took charge in the light of the absence of the CEC. Article 217 of the Constitution allows the most senior member of ECP to act as the CEC in few conditions.

(a)  the office of Commissioner is vacant, or

(b)  the Commissioner is absent or is unable to perform the functions of his office due to any other cause,

According to the article, the most senior member in the age of the members of the Commission shall act as commissioner.

Justice (retd) Irshad Qaiser, member of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Election Commission, administered the oath to the acting CEC.

The members of the ECP of Sindh and Balochistan had already retired. Therefore, the retirement of CEC will cause the ECP to become unfunctional. the acting CEC will not be able to form a bench to hear any complaint.


The parliamentary committee will conduct a meeting on December 9 to decide the new CEC.

Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan has approved three names for the post of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). The names include the current Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), secretary Babar Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad. the other two potential candidates are Fazal Abbas Maken and Arif Khan.

Earlier, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif had suggested three names for the CEC post. He recommended Nasir Mahmood Khosa, Jalil Abbas Jilani, and  Akhlaq Ahmed Tarar.
