KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) held province-wide demonstrations against Ret. Gen Parvez Musharraf’s horrific death sentence. On Sunday, Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqi said: “We have always appreciated the courts of Pakistan, but we fear that the public is losing its trust in the courts and the judicial system”.
The MQM-P leadership expressed solidarity with the former military ruler at Liaquatabad Flyover. Demonstrators opposing the court’s verdict begin to gather at the spot at 2 pm. Participants including women and children demanded justice for Musharraf by holding up play cards and shouting slogans.
Siddiqi argued that “the court issued such a verdict and used such language that is extra-judicial and against Sharia”. “The verdict has not just disrespected a person but the entire nation, and we have the right to object to it and appeal against it,” he added.
The special court last Thursday announced the detailed verdict in Musharraf’s high treason case.
The most controversial part of the judgment was para 66 that started a war on social media. The para suggested by the head of the three-member bench directed the law enforcers to capture former military ruler.
“If found dead, his corpse be dragged to the D-Chowk, Islamabad, Pakistan and be hanged for 03 days.”
Justice Shahid Karim agreed to most part of the decision. However, Justice Karim attached his separate disagreement note in regards to the para 66 of the decision.
